All-new BMW G 310 R

BMW G 310 R (K03)As predicted after the stunning prototype stunter was debuted last month, BMW has just unveiled its first roadster under 500cc – the G 310 R – which is a sortie into the A2 segment, and looks uncannily like KTM’s Duke range.

The sporty little naked number is powered by a 313cc single pot, and the G-unit punts out a claimed 34bhp at 9,500rpm (very close to its 10,500rpm redline) with maximum torque of 28Nm at 7,500rpm. Given the relatively budget segment, there’s nothing really ground-breaking although the four-valve cylinder is tilted backwards and the head is span 180-degress. According to BMW, this gives a better air/fuel mixture, a lower centre of gravity and a shorter wheelbase – 1,374mm to be precise. A by-product is a consequent longer swingarm to aid stability without hampering steering, and geometry sounds very similar to the Duke 390, which is no bad thing…

Chassis wise, there’s a tubular steel frame mated to upside-down forks, and the G 310 R weighs in at 158.5kg and is tamed by BMW’s own 2-channel ABS, which sounds like the system can be disabled, induced by a four-piston caliper at the front – not your usual sparrow-limbed components. Given its market place, a low seat height of 785mm will hearten learners and the vertically challenged, and can be replaced with an optional 760mm or 815mm seat.

Interestingly, and not surprisingly, BMW state that the G 310 R has been ‘developed in Munich’ but the bikes will be assembled in India by TVS Motor Company – India’s third largest motorcycle manufacturer. BMW’s usual optional extras list comprises of a top-box, centre stand, 12-volt socket and heated grips, among other titbits. It’ll cost around £4,500 and will be available mid-2016…

BMW also unveiled an electric-powered S 1000 RR. More on that later.
